History & Ethics
Celebrating over 3 decades of providing ethical produce to South Wales
Founded in 1981 by brothers Pete and John Lenaghan, Organic Wholefood and Homebrew was originally based in Pontypridd Market. The shop's mission was to provide a wide selection of ethically-sourced local and international foods: wholefoods, fresh organic produce, local preserves and pickles, home-brew equipment, dried fruit, nuts, honey, herbs, spices, sauces, anti-pasti and a whole lot more.
Pete’s generous and kind nature and his passion for providing ethical goods has made him a well-loved member of the community. The shop managed to survive the dark days of the 1980’s, where pit closures had a devastating effect on the valleys communities and Pete supported the miner’s families by donating his produce to feed the children.
In 1996 the shop moved to it's current premises at 8 Mill Street and eventually John left the running of the shop to Pete. Pete has now mostly retired and has handed over the reigns to Caspar Harris, who shares the same ethical vision as the Lenahan brothers and is gradually modernising the business. Caspar is a keen cook and has knowledge of all things home-brewing. Caspar is actively seeking local ethical food businesses to work in partnership with.
We cater for the increased interest in plant-based diets and it has inspired us to sell more chilled vegan foods in our a new refrigerated area. We also care about what we put into the environment so we stock a range of ethical household detergents and also sell beauty products and toiletries guaranteed to be free from animal testing. Our shop in Pontypridd is truly unique
